Dog Training Melbourne
Helping Melbourne Dogs Become Calmer, Happier and Easier to Live With
If your dog is pulling on the lead, barking, jumping on visitors, reacting to other dogs or simply not listening, you’re not alone.
At SitDropStay Melbourne, we don’t simply teach dogs commands. We help owners understand why unwanted behaviour develops in the first place and show them how to create lasting change in the environment where it matters most—your home.
With more than 1,000 in-home consultations completed across Melbourne, Rod Sinclair has helped families transform everything from puppy behaviour and anxiety to aggression and severe reactivity.
We come to you, identify the underlying cause of the behaviour and help you create real, lasting change.

Why Melbourne Families Choose SitDropStay
Choosing a dog trainer isn’t simply about finding someone who can teach your dog to sit or walk nicely on a lead. It’s about finding someone who can help you understand why unwanted behaviour is happening and guide both you and your dog towards lasting change.
For more than nine years, Melbourne families have trusted Rod Sinclair and SitDropStay to help them with everything from excitable puppies and adolescent dogs to anxiety, reactivity, aggression and complex behavioural problems. During that time, Rod has completed more than 1,000 private in-home consultations, helping owners build calmer, happier relationships with their dogs.
We Come To You
Dogs behave differently at home than they do in a training facility. That’s why every consultation takes place in your own environment, where we can observe the real situations that influence your dog’s behaviour and provide practical guidance that fits naturally into your everyday life.
We Focus on Behaviour, Not Just Training
Many unwanted behaviours are symptoms rather than the real problem. Pulling on the lead, barking, jumping, reactivity or aggression often develop because a dog is trying to solve something within its environment or relationship. Our role is to help you understand what your dog is communicating so we can address the cause, not simply manage the symptoms.
Personal Coaching for You and Your Dog
Successful training isn’t about changing your dog in isolation. It’s about helping owners develop the awareness, confidence and consistency that allow their dogs to feel secure and make better decisions. Every consultation is tailored to your family, your lifestyle and your dog’s individual needs.
Trusted by Melbourne Families
With more than 279 five-star Google reviews, SitDropStay Melbourne has earned a reputation for providing calm, practical advice and achieving meaningful results. Practical, Compassionate and Honest
There is no single technique or quick fix that works for every dog. Every family and every dog is different. We take the time to understand your situation, explain why behaviour is occurring and provide realistic, achievable guidance that creates lasting change without unnecessary complexity.

Your Melbourne Dog Trainer, Rod Sinclair
Rod Sinclair has been with SitDropStay for more than nine years and has completed over 1,000 private, in-home consultations across Melbourne.
Known for his calm, intuitive and practical approach, Rod has extensive experience helping puppies, anxious and reactive dogs, rescue dogs and families struggling with complex behaviour at home. Clients consistently praise his ability to understand both dogs and people, explain behaviour clearly and create meaningful change—often from the very first session.
Rod believes lasting improvement comes from helping owners understand why behaviour is happening and creating a relationship built on trust, respect and stability.
The SitDropStay Difference
Most dog training focuses on changing what your dog does.
Our focus is understanding why your dog is doing it in the first place.
Whether your dog is barking, pulling on the lead, reacting to other dogs, jumping on visitors or struggling to settle, those behaviours are rarely the real problem. More often, they are your dog’s way of responding to their environment, emotions or relationship with the people around them.
That’s why our consultations don’t begin with teaching commands. They begin by understanding your dog’s daily life, your relationship together and the patterns that have shaped the behaviour over time.
When those underlying patterns begin to change, behaviour often changes naturally.
We Coach People as Much as Dogs
One of the biggest discoveries many of our clients make is that lasting behaviour change starts with them.
Dogs are incredibly perceptive animals. They respond not only to what we ask them to do, but also to how we communicate, how consistent we are, how we handle pressure and the emotional environment we create around them.
Rather than asking owners to memorise endless techniques, we help you develop the awareness, confidence and understanding that allows your dog to feel calmer, more secure and more willing to follow your guidance.
Real Change Happens Where Your Dog Lives
Dogs don’t live in training halls or obedience clubs.
They live in your home, walk through your neighbourhood, greet visitors at your front door and share everyday life with your family.
That’s why every SitDropStay consultation takes place in your own environment. By working where the behaviour actually occurs, we’re able to identify the influences contributing to the problem and provide practical guidance that fits naturally into your daily routine.
Our goal isn’t simply to improve behaviour during a training session.
Our goal is to help create lasting change that continues long after we’ve left.
Building a Better Relationship
At SitDropStay, we believe the relationship between you and your dog is the foundation of every behaviour.
When that relationship is built on trust, understanding, clear guidance and consistency, dogs naturally become calmer, more confident and easier to live with.
Training then becomes much more than teaching commands.
It becomes about helping both you and your dog enjoy a happier, more connected life together.
We don’t believe your dog is the problem.
We believe unwanted behaviour is often your dog’s best solution to a situation they don’t yet know how to navigate.
When we help you understand what your dog is communicating—and guide both of you towards a healthier relationship—lasting behaviour change becomes possible.
Common Behaviour Problems We Help With
Every dog is different, and every behaviour develops for a reason. Whether your dog is a young puppy or an older companion, unwanted behaviour is often your dog’s way of adapting to their environment rather than a sign that they’re stubborn or “bad.”
At SitDropStay Melbourne, we help families understand what is driving their dog’s behaviour and guide them towards practical, lasting solutions that work in everyday life.
Pulling on the Lead
Walking should be enjoyable for both you and your dog. If every walk feels like a battle, we’ll help you understand why your dog feels the need to lead, pull or constantly scan their surroundings, and show you how to create calmer, more connected walks together.
Barking at Visitors or Everyday Noises
Excessive barking can quickly become stressful for both dogs and owners. Whether your dog reacts to visitors, people walking past the house or everyday sounds, we’ll identify what’s driving the behaviour and help your dog feel calmer and more secure without relying on constant correction.
Reactive Dogs
If your dog lunges, barks or becomes overwhelmed when they see other dogs, people, bicycles or moving objects, you’re not alone. Reactivity is one of the most common issues we help with. Our goal is to reduce the emotional intensity behind the behaviour so your dog can feel safer and make better decisions in everyday situations.
Aggression
Aggressive behaviour is often frightening and emotionally exhausting for families. Whether your dog growls, snaps or bites, we work to understand the underlying causes, improve safety and create a clear behaviour change plan that helps restore confidence for both you and your dog.
Separation Anxiety and Attachment Issues
Dogs that struggle when left alone are often experiencing more than simple boredom. We’ll help you understand the lifestyle patterns and relationship dynamics contributing to your dog’s dependence and develop strategies that encourage calm, confident independence.
Puppies and Adolescent Dogs
The first year of your dog’s life lays the foundation for everything that follows. Whether you’re dealing with biting, jumping, toilet training, chewing, overexcitement or adolescent testing of boundaries, we’ll help you build healthy habits from the beginning and prevent small issues becoming lifelong problems.
Jumping Up, Excitement and Poor Impulse Control
Many dogs become overly excited when greeting people or entering stimulating environments. Rather than simply suppressing the behaviour, we help dogs develop greater emotional balance and self-control so they can remain calmer even when life becomes exciting.
Multi-Dog Households
Living with more than one dog can sometimes create tension, competition or conflict within the home. We help owners better understand the relationships between their dogs and create a calmer, more balanced household where everyone feels more secure.
Rescue Dogs and Anxious Dogs
Every rescue dog brings their own history and experiences. Whether your dog lacks confidence, startles easily or struggles to settle into family life, we’ll work patiently with both you and your dog to build trust, understanding and emotional resilience.
Every Behaviour Has a Story
One of the biggest misconceptions about dog training is that unwanted behaviour is the problem.
In reality, behaviour is often your dog’s attempt to solve something they’re finding difficult, confusing or emotionally overwhelming.
Our role isn’t simply to stop the behaviour. It’s to understand why it’s happening, help you see the world from your dog’s perspective and guide both of you towards a calmer, healthier relationship that creates lasting change.
If your dog is experiencing more complex or ongoing issues such as reactivity, anxiety or aggression, you can explore our Dog Behaviour Training Melbourne or Reactive Dog Training Melbourne pages for more specialised support.
Begin Your Dog’s Behaviour Transformation Today
Living with a dog that constantly barks, pulls on the lead, reacts to other dogs or struggles to settle can be emotionally exhausting.
Many of the families we meet tell us they feel frustrated, embarrassed or worried they’ve somehow let their dog down. Others have already tried obedience classes, watched countless online videos or worked with other trainers without achieving the lasting change they hoped for.
If that’s where you are right now, you’re not alone.
The good news is that most behaviour problems are not permanent. They are often your dog’s way of adapting to situations they don’t yet know how to navigate. When you begin to understand what your dog is communicating and create the right environment for change, remarkable progress is often possible.
At SitDropStay Melbourne, our goal isn’t simply to help your dog behave better.
It’s to help you enjoy life together again.
Whether you’re welcoming a new puppy, living with an anxious rescue dog or trying to overcome long-standing behavioural challenges, Rod will guide you with practical advice, honest support and a personalised approach built around your home, your lifestyle and your dog.
Because every family deserves the opportunity to experience the calm, trusting and rewarding relationship that first inspired them to bring a dog into their lives.

Client Testimonials
The VALUE we uncovered in our session was incredible.
Every dog will be different no doubt, but in just one session we established the ground rules at home and did a walking on lead session. Our boy is a massive pain on the lead, and we have tried everything to correct this.
Literally in 10 minutes our boy Olly was walking next to us like he’d been doing it his whole life.
We are super excited for the future!

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Training in Melbourne
How many training sessions will my dog need?
Every dog and every family is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Many of our clients notice significant improvements after their first consultation because they begin to understand why their dog’s behaviour is occurring and how to guide them differently. More complex behavioural issues may benefit from follow-up sessions, but our goal is always to give you the knowledge and confidence to continue making progress long after we’ve left.
Do you come to my home?
Yes. Every consultation is conducted in your home and local environment.
We believe this is where the most meaningful behaviour change occurs because we can observe your dog’s everyday routines, identify the influences contributing to unwanted behaviour and provide practical guidance that fits naturally into your daily life.
What areas of Melbourne do you service?
We provide private in-home dog training and behaviour consultations throughout Melbourne and many surrounding suburbs.
If you’re unsure whether we travel to your area, simply contact us and we’ll be happy to let you know.
Can you help aggressive or reactive dogs?
Yes.
Many of the dogs we work with struggle with barking, lunging, growling, fear, anxiety or aggression towards other dogs, people or visitors.
Rather than simply trying to suppress these behaviours, we work to understand why they are occurring and develop a practical behaviour change plan that improves both safety and confidence.
Do you use treats or harsh corrections?
Our approach isn’t built around one training technique.
Every dog is different, and every family is different.
Our focus is helping owners understand their dog’s behaviour and create the calm, consistent relationship that encourages lasting change. We always aim to use fair, practical and humane methods that suit the individual dog and the people they live with.
Can you help with puppies?
Absolutely.
Early guidance can make a tremendous difference to your puppy’s future behaviour.
We help new puppy owners with toilet training, biting, jumping, lead walking, coming when called, confidence building, settling at home and developing healthy habits that prevent many common behavioural problems later in life.
What makes SitDropStay different from other Melbourne dog trainers?
Most dog training focuses on changing behaviour.
Our approach focuses on understanding why the behaviour developed in the first place.
By helping owners better understand their dogs, improve everyday communication and create calmer relationships, we aim to achieve behaviour change that lasts rather than simply managing symptoms.
Will my dog need ongoing training?
Most owners don’t want a trainer for life—they want the knowledge and confidence to continue helping their own dog.
That’s exactly what we aim to provide.
Our goal is to teach you how to understand your dog’s behaviour so you can continue building a calm, trusting relationship long after your consultation has finished.
Is it ever too late to train an older dog?
Not at all.
Dogs are capable of learning throughout their lives.
Whether your dog is six months old or twelve years old, positive changes are still possible when we understand what is driving the behaviour and provide clear, consistent guidance.
How do I book a consultation?
Booking is easy.
Simply contact SitDropStay Melbourne by phone or complete our online enquiry form. We’ll discuss your dog’s behaviour, answer any questions you may have and recommend the most appropriate consultation for your situation.
Is my dog the problem?
One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that unwanted behaviour means you have a “bad dog.”
In reality, behaviour is often your dog’s best attempt to solve a situation they don’t yet know how to navigate.
Our role is to help you understand what your dog is communicating, identify the factors contributing to the behaviour and guide both of you towards a calmer, healthier relationship.
Many of our clients tell us that this change in understanding becomes the moment everything starts to improve.

Meet Rod Sinclair — Melbourne Dog Trainer and Behaviour Specialist
Rod Sinclair has been helping Melbourne families and their dogs through SitDropStay for more than nine years. In that time, he has completed over 1,000 private, in-home consultations, working with everything from excitable puppies and anxious rescue dogs to reactivity, aggression, household conflict and long-standing behavioural problems.
Rod’s connection with dogs began early. After years of asking his parents for a dog, he arrived home with a puppy at the age of ten, determined to care for him himself. In an unexpected twist, Rod’s father later became a senior officer with the Victorian Police Dog Squad, giving Rod the opportunity to spend time around working dogs and strengthening what would become a lifelong affinity with them.
Before becoming a professional dog trainer, Rod worked in carpentry and later as a massage therapist alongside a respected doctor of natural therapies. Those varied experiences helped him develop a natural ability to read people, communicate clearly and connect with clients on emotional, practical and intuitive levels.
Rod eventually felt drawn to work that was more meaningful and recognised that he had a genuine gift for helping people and dogs understand one another. That journey brought him to SitDropStay, where he trained under George and developed into one of Melbourne’s most experienced in-home dog behaviour consultants.
Rod believes that lasting behaviour change begins with the relationship between dog and owner. His approach is calm, honest and practical, helping owners understand why their dog is behaving as they are and what needs to change within the household, daily routines and human–dog relationship.
Clients regularly describe Rod as warm, reassuring, knowledgeable and exceptionally clear. Many report significant changes during their first consultation—not only in their dog’s behaviour, but in their own confidence and understanding.
Rod especially enjoys helping people feel seen, supported and empowered. His goal is not simply to make a dog more obedient, but to help families create the trust, stability and understanding that allow both the dog and the people to live more calmly together.
